E-Bikes & Scooters buying guide
Battery safety is the most important thing to check on any e-bike. Look for UL 2849 certification, which tests the battery, charger and motor together — battery fires are the main risk with cheap e-bikes. Battery capacity, in watt-hours, then decides your real-world range more than any headline mileage claim.
Think about servicing before you buy. Brands with local dealer networks or European stock make repairs straightforward, while direct-import bikes can leave you waiting on parts. Also check the legal class in your area: high-power e-motos and dirt bikes are generally not street-legal without registration.
Before you buy
- Look for UL 2849 certification on the electrical system
- Compare battery capacity in Wh, not just claimed range
- Check how and where the bike can be serviced
- Confirm the bike's legal class for where you will ride
